Going solar in Carlsbad
A lot of Carlsbad neighborhoods are master-planned communities with HOAs. California's Solar Rights Act protects your right to go solar, but your HOA may still require an architectural application. We'll help you gather the plan set and spec sheets they usually ask for.
Carlsbad is served by Clean Energy Alliance, the local community choice energy provider, while SDG&E still delivers the power and handles solar interconnection and billing. That's why we start every estimate from your own bill instead of a generic rate.
Coastal neighborhoods west of I-5 get more marine layer than inland La Costa or Calavera Hills. A system design uses modeled annual production for your exact roof, so the estimate reflects where you actually live.
Permits & utility
Carlsbad is its own city, so permits go through the City of Carlsbad. SDG&E is the utility for Carlsbad, and it gives final permission to operate after inspection.

Carlsbad solar questions
Who handles solar permits in Carlsbad?
The City of Carlsbad. The installing licensed contractor submits the permit and schedules inspection, and SDG&E issues permission to operate.
Can my Carlsbad HOA say no to solar?
Under California's Solar Rights Act, an HOA can't prohibit solar or impose rules that significantly increase cost or reduce performance. It can require an application and reasonable conditions, such as panel placement guidelines.
What is NEM 3.0 (the Net Billing Tariff) in San Diego?
NEM 3.0 is the common name for California's Net Billing Tariff. Since April 15, 2023, new rooftop solar customers of SDG&E, PG&E and SCE go on net billing, which credits the solar you send back to the grid at lower rates that change by hour. Using more of your own solar, often by storing it in a battery for the evening, matters more than it did under older rules.
Can my HOA stop me from installing solar?
Generally no. California's Solar Rights Act stops HOAs from banning solar or imposing restrictions that significantly raise cost or reduce performance. An HOA can still require an application and reasonable conditions, and we'll help you prepare it.
