Solar & Tesla Powerwall in Poway
Sunrun solar paired with Tesla Powerwall for homes in Poway, the inland North County city known as "The City in the Country."
Going solar in Poway
Poway sits inland, where summers tend to run hotter than on the coast and air conditioning works harder in the afternoon and evening. Under California's net billing rules, storing midday solar in a battery to use during those evening hours is often worth more than sending it back to the grid.
Parts of Poway are in wildfire-prone hillside areas. During high fire risk, SDG&E can turn off power in some areas as a safety measure (a Public Safety Power Shutoff). A Tesla Powerwall set up for backup can keep selected circuits, or more of the home depending on the design, running during an outage, and solar can recharge it during the day.
Many Poway properties have larger lots, horse properties or detached structures. We'll look at where panels make sense and which loads you want backed up before anything is designed.
Permits & utility
Poway is its own city, so permits go through the City of Poway. SDG&E is the utility for Poway, and it gives final permission to operate after inspection.

Poway solar questions
Will a Powerwall keep my Poway home running during a power shutoff?
If it's installed and configured for backup, a Powerwall can power the circuits included in the design during an outage, and solar can recharge it while the sun is up. How long it lasts depends on how much you use and how many batteries you have.
Who issues solar permits in Poway?
The City of Poway. The installing licensed contractor handles the permit and inspection, and SDG&E grants permission to operate.
What is NEM 3.0 (the Net Billing Tariff) in San Diego?
NEM 3.0 is the common name for California's Net Billing Tariff. Since April 15, 2023, new rooftop solar customers of SDG&E, PG&E and SCE go on net billing, which credits the solar you send back to the grid at lower rates that change by hour. Using more of your own solar, often by storing it in a battery for the evening, matters more than it did under older rules.
Can my HOA stop me from installing solar?
Generally no. California's Solar Rights Act stops HOAs from banning solar or imposing restrictions that significantly raise cost or reduce performance. An HOA can still require an application and reasonable conditions, and we'll help you prepare it.
