Tesla Powerwall home batteries, paired with Sunrun solar
Store your solar for the evening and keep the circuits you choose powered when the grid goes down.
What Powerwall does
Tesla Powerwall is a home battery. Tesla lists Powerwall 3 at 13.5 kWh of usable energy per unit with a built-in solar inverter, and more units can be added for larger homes or longer backup.
- Self-powering: store midday solar and use it in the evening, when grid power usually costs the most.
- Backup: when configured for backup, it powers the circuits in your design during an outage and recharges from solar.
- App control: the Tesla app shows production, storage and usage.
Sizing it for your home
How many units you need depends on what you want backed up (fridge and lights only, or AC, pool equipment and EV charging too) and how long you want backup to last. We work this out from your usage at the appointment.

Powerwall questions
What is Tesla Powerwall 3?
Powerwall 3 is Tesla's home battery. Tesla lists 13.5 kWh of usable energy per unit and a built-in solar inverter, and systems can be expanded with more units. It can store solar for later use and keep selected circuits powered during an outage.
Can a Powerwall power my home during an outage?
Yes, if it's installed and configured for backup. It powers whatever circuits the design includes, which can be essential loads or more of the home depending on battery count and your usage. Solar can recharge it during the day.
Do I need a battery with solar in San Diego?
A battery isn't required, but under net billing it often makes sense. A battery like Tesla Powerwall stores midday solar for the evening, when grid power is usually most expensive, and can provide backup power during outages if it's set up for that.
